History of Upwork
From the beginning, Upwork has had a journey commencing with the establishment of Elance in 1998 by Beerud Sheth and Srini Anumolu and oDesk in 2003 by Odysseas Tsatalos and Stratis Karamanlakis. Elance was first launched as Small Business Marketplace, while oDesk started as staffing companies and graduated to become an online freelancing platform. These two companies announced a merger in December 2013 and became Elance-oDesk, which was subsequently renamed Upwork in 2015.
The new identity of Upwork is thus the best of the two platforms combining the features while phasing out Elance. In 2018, Upwork went public and on October 3, an Initial Public Offering (IPO) was filed. Due to the war in Ukraine, the company suspended its freelancers and clients from operations in Russia and Belarus in March 2022.
